Science at Fremont-Elizabeth City High School

A study of science at Fremont-Elizabeth City High School provides all students with a better understanding of the world they live in. Our brand new laboratories and modern equipment, in the hands of our specialised science staff will introduce students of all ages to the wonders of science. Learning about scientific discoveries and inventions of the past, and the major theoretical frameworks that form the basis of modern scientific knowledge today, will lead to an investigation of possible future scientific advancements. A solid understanding of the Scientific Method will be used to guide students through the same processes used by scientists around the world to check, test and improve their scientific thinking. New and developing areas of science including robotics, therapeutic foods, nanotechnology and feeding a growing global population will also be explored.

Science in the Middle Years

Science is compulsory for all students from Years 8 to 10. Each year, students will study topics in the main areas of study: Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Earth Sciences. Students learning will be developed and extended throughout each year of high school so they are well prepared for the high expectations of science knowledge which are assumed on entry to the senior years of school. As well as covering content as diverse as the reactivity of metals, how mountains are formed, the life cycle of a red blood cell and the safest design for a car, students will also be taught essential science skills ranging from the safe operation of a Bunsen Burner and writing a structured practical report to the ability to think critically. The curriculum is further supported by a range of science competitions which are made available to interested students’, and information on career links to help students see the relevance of their learning at school.

Science and SACE

In the senior years at Fremont-Elizabeth City High School, the science curriculum diversifies to provide options for all students with an interest in science. Trade and VET-linked science courses at Year 11 are available for students pursuing careers as electricians, motor mechanics and gas-fitters, while students in Year 11 and 12 with plans to study at TAFE or university can choose from Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Psychology. The senior years Scientific Studies subject provides additional opportunities for students to investigate scientific issues that affect our society, including studying the science of sport and forensic science unit.   All science subjects are described in greater detail in our Handbook, available on-line. For any other enquiries about the science options available at our school, please contact the Science Coordinator at Fremont-Elizabeth City High School directly.
